Jorge Martin, the new signing of Ducati pramac, he got on a superbike for the first time in his life, he confessed.
It was this past weekend at the Cartagena circuit, which he shared with Xavi Forés and the debutant in SBK, Tito Rabat.
Martín could not, obviously, test what will be his motorcycle in 2021, the Ducati Desmosedici, but he did it on a Panigale V4 S practically standard (only with Akrapovic exhaust kit, slicks and little else). Jorge achieved an excellent best turn of 1’35.0 on the Murcian track, only surpassed by Xavi Forés (BMW), with a 1’34,745. The record for this track is held by Briton Luke Mossey, who with his BSB Kawasaki ZX-10R set a better record of 1’32,330. Also present were Aron Canet (1’35.797), Peter Hickman, Iker Lecuona, Tony Arbolino, Jaume Masiá and Raúl Fernández.
Martín said that he was impressed by the power (221 hp) of the Panigale.
“I have ridden the Panigale V4 S because I have never ridden this type of bike before, with this power, in a circuit. I had to understand many things ”, he told GPOne.
“I don’t know how much it looks like the Desmosedici that I will ride, but without a doubt this Ducati is one of the most beautiful bikes I have ridden, and it also has incredible power. I have always liked Ducati, and now that I have this bike I am very happy ”.
“The first day was a bit complicated… The bike moves a lot, it’s a bit peculiar”, confessed the young Spanish pilot. “But now I have already taken a good step forward, and that is important.”
Jorge explains how this test was organized in Cartagena:
“As the situation is difficult because of the Covid, we have gotten together several drivers, such as Xavi Forés and Tito Rabat, thus we have divided the costs of the track and we have fun. We are all going strong, and that helps ”.
Come with an open mind
“I still have to get on the Desmosedici, I haven’t even gotten on. I will try it in Qatar. Tardozzi told me not to expect anything, to come with an open mind ”.
“The first time I saw the Panigale I thought it was a great bike, but I thought it would be difficult, and then I had a great time. I think it’s going to be the same with the Desmosedici, but maybe I’m wrong and it’s not like that. So I prefer not to have preconceptions, and to go with an open mind ”.
His goals for this year are clear: “Not falling down and being the ‘Rookie of the Year”says ‘Martinator’, although he acknowledges that both Marini and Bastianini will not make it easy for him.
