From the hand of KTM we have been able to enjoy the international presentation -to the top- on the Canary Island of Tenerife of the new model of the Austrian firm, the new KTM 390 Adventure, the last “little” Trail to hit the market to drive with A2 card.
We have been a while ago that it seems that the type motorcycles Trail the evidence is overwhelming, all brands are releasing their models with more adventurous character and KTM could not be less. This time focused on customers with less experience or profiles who do not intend to access a high-performance motorcycle.
The KTM 390 Adventure lands on a rising market and with competitors like BMW G 310 GS, the Royald Enfield Himalayan or the Kawasaki Versys-X300. All of them with less power than the orange option. Accessible, agile, easy motorcycles that offer a wide range of use with contained prices.
This weekend we have been able to put the new KTM 390 Adventure to the test both on and off road, giving the chest at all times with a agility and poise worthy of a motorcycle with a larger displacement. All wrapped up in that KTM halo so “Ready to race” and with the philosophy of the #adventuremore brand itself, so truly, so much of wanting to show your product in all conditions and taken to the limit counting on Joachim sauer, KTM Product Manager for Off-Road, as one of the guides (the one in our group) of the almost 200km done looking to tickle this great little bike.
It should be noted that Joachim was European Enduro champion on two occasions when this was the greatest achievement for a rider in this specialty. The official Dakarian pilot of the brand also accompanied us part of the route San Sunderland. Imagine the level of the route … A dream for any motorcycle lover.
Engine of the new KTM 390 Adventure
As we have commented on the small single cylinder engine of 373.2cc it is the most powerful in the trail scene of its category. With liquid cooling it is capable of developing 44cv at 9,000rpm counting on a couple of 37Nm at 7,000rpm. The engine is the same as its sister, the KTM 390 Duke, counting with Bosh injection and EMS Bosh with RBW.
It’s a machine designed for a sporty attitude with the credentials of the KTM Adventure family. Allowing very low consumption being able to travel more than 430km with 14.5l of gasoline that houses your deposit. Also, as an advantage we can highlight its low maintenance cost.
The exhaust line, it has two catalytic converters prior to the light silencer of clear inspiration of the motorcycles participating in the Dakar rally.
Your change, with quicksifter -optional- that we were able to taste is a true delight. No false dead spots throughout the tour, accurate, precise and easy to use at any rev range it makes us enjoy every gear change, whether it is up or down.
Regarding the use of the block, we find a linear delivery of its power without being able to highlight one range above another and, taking into account the type of motorcycle it is, its price and its segment is above its competitors in the market making pilots with extensive experience enjoy without missing more horses to link curves of the magnificent roads that we could enjoy in Tenerife. What’s more, we think that with the power and delivery of this little 373.2cc we can match the rhythms that with bikes that surpass in power and displacement since the set is agile and with more than enough thrust.
Cycle part of the new KTM 390 Adventure
To start in the cycle part we can talk about lightweight chassis who rides this new KTM 390 Adventure, which was born from the tests and results of the KTM 450 Rally, providing the perfect balance between stiffness and flexibility.
Stable, with a short wheelbase, the chassis fulfills its function perfectly. On the route with countless curves linked at a strong pace we have been able to feel the poise of a bigger bike, a stability that does not disappear even in strong gusts of wind. The propitious steering angle makes us have stability but above all with agility and maneuverability becoming child’s play, I change direction when facing twisty roads.
Its long swingarm is responsible for housing the shock absorber rear 177mm travel WP APEX adjustable rebound and preload providing us with constant security including uneven surfaces.
The inverted fork, Signed by WP APEX, has origin and was developed in the Enduro family from the Austrian firm. It has 43mm in diameter and is adjustable compression and rebound Without the need for tools, at the click of a button you will be able to tailor the suspension to suit you and thus enjoy the set on different types of paths, driving, etc.
As to brakes we found a single album of 320mm with four-piston radial caliper at the front and a single 230mm disc with floating caliper. Both accompanied by the Two-channel 9.1MP ABS with proprietary off-road mode and cornering ABS. His touch and bite are surprising, although progressive is more than enough to stop the whole at all times.
The test of the new KTM 390 Adventure was developed on different types of surfaces including a good section of off-road where the set of chassis and suspensions did not give us more than good sensations with a continuous message of affirmation of quality even when taking the motorcycle for rocky terrain worthy of Enduro bikes.
Technology of the new KTM 390 Adventure
How could it be otherwise at this point, the new KTM 390 Adventure is a motorcycle packed with technology. A technology that works in favor of our safety and comfort at all times.
From the MTC traction control –Disconnectable to make your first steps off-road- up to the ABS in a curve through an ABS to face the off-road world the little big bike has everything you need to undertake an adventure at the highest level.
