The turn of the XC
The broken roads of Morocco are a habitat where the XC is at its best. The 21 ”front rim, Longer-travel, softer-setting suspensions improve ride comfort. The WP set reads the road very well and allows you to ride very happy even with imperfections on the ground. The bike feels as manageable as the XR but always bearing in mind that when braking the suspension sinks much more and you have to adapt the driving to a pure trail. The touch of the new front Brembo is appropriate for this model considering its more dual use asphalt-field. Powerful bite but without being excessive and especially with a lot of progressiveness. A success the change from Nissin to Brembo, for our taste.
What we were all looking forward to was the arrival of the second day of testing. After a day of snow, rain and cold, it dawned sunny. With low temperatures, but it indicated that it was going to be a glorious day, and it was. The Tiger 800 XCa were already prepared with lug rubbers, Pirelli Scorpion Rally, to enjoy the desert and its slopes. The rains made the terrain perfect. With a lot of grip and traction and also fun with areas of mud and water. The absence of dust was a plus that is rarely found in this part of the world.
The standing posture is comfortable. You can take a very Dakarian forward position and you will find everything in its place. From my point of view, I would push the handlebar a little more forward if we are going to go into the field a lot to favor this position since it comes standard a little dropped to improve sitting ergonomics.
The support on the large footrests is perfect. The foot rests widely and above all it is very well fixed to its “bear paw”. As the display is adjustable, we can also raise it to our liking to be able to look at it from above. A success, without a doubt. But let’s get down to business.
The Triumph Tiger 800 XC standard incorporates the Off Road mode. It is a specific engine map for off road with a touch of gas that seeks traction. This response is smooth if we go to low laps and combined with the new clutch and the shorter first gear we will drive much more comfortable than with the previous version. However, it is forceful if you open strong gas. In addition, in this mode the rear ABS is disconnected, but the front ABS remains, a detail that will be appreciated by those with less experience in the field, but which is also useful and safe for experts. In fact, it is difficult to make him jump and it gives a huge safety bonus when you ride on tracks fast with a motorcycle weighing more than 200 kg. Traction control is active. It acts at a low intrusion level so it is possible to slide with the rear wheel but always under control. Electronics haters will have to eat their words when trying out this new off-road setup.
But if what you are really looking for is Real tough driving in Off Road Pro mode he is yours. Here everything is disconnected. You have the 95 horses in your fist, no ABS or traction control. It is a mode only for seasoned pilots, but without a doubt the most fun. Being able to open the throttle while the bike slides its rear wheel on the tracks is a pleasure that is hardly comparable. The bike here is where it gets its claw and where you can see how far it can take you. Surely you are the limit because its qualities are enormous. You just have to be aware of its weight and dimensions. On big tracks it is not noticeable. It is stable, noble and precise, but in slower areas or when braking you will feel its weight and you have to be careful.
The new WPs are excellent and their appropriate setting for going out into the field. If you are going to really do off, more demanding, we recommend adjusting them a little, you can do it in a simple way, because with its standard setting you can stop on big bumpy jumps.
We really liked the new Brembos here. They have the precise mordant and although on the road they seemed fair in the field, they are ideal.
Which of the two do I choose?
If you have gotten this far reading, I imagine that you will be very clear about which version is the one that best suits your needs. If you really like the trail, yours is the Triumph Tiger 800 XC, for his qualities and more country skills. However, if your routes are going to be more asphalt and occasionally off road, opt for the Triumph Tiger 800 XR. Its lower ground clearance, its suspension setting and its tires will make the experience on good asphalt superior. Now we let you go crazy choosing between their more than 50 accessories originals and the level of equipment you want.
